UFC Betting Odds: Nate Marquardt vs Rick Story June 26

As a rule of thumb, it’s a good idea not to get into too many fights. Three or four a year should be enough – win or lose, you need time in between to recover. But Rick Story is a special case: He’s been given an opportunity to fight in the main event of a UFC card. Granted, it’s on cable television, but never look a gift horse in the mouth.
Less than one month after beating Thiago Alves by unanimous decision at UFC 130, Story is stepping in as an injury replacement for Anthony Johnson at UFC on Versus 4 (Sunday, 9:00 p.m. ET). Former Pancrase champion Nate Marquardt provides the opposition. MMA odds list Story as the -130 favorite.
Ironically, it could be Marquardt who runs out of gas in this matchup. This is his first fight in the Welterweight division after failing to win the Middleweight title – Anderson Silva has worn that belt since 2006. Cutting from 185 to 170 pounds is no picnic. Neither is fighting Story; he’s won each of his last six fights in the Octagon to improve to 13-3 lifetime, and his victory over Alves was an expert display of striking, grappling and ring command.
Story should have betting value here. He doesn’t bring much star power to the Octagon (not yet, at least), and simply being named “Rick Story” will cause many casual bettors to treat him like a generic fighter. Marquardt, on the other hand, made a name for himself as a middleweight and is still ranked No. 4 in that division according to Sherdog. He’s 10-4 in UFC action (31-10-2 lifetime) with victories over Martin Kampmann, Demian Maia and Dan Miller. Marquardt is an excellent all-around fighter; the challenge of dropping in weight class is his only real negative from a combat standpoint. As they say, may the best man win.
